A protected battery has a PCB protection circuit to help prevent overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent, and short circuits. An unprotected battery has no PCB and is usually shorter.

Protected and unprotected batteries (such as 18650 and other lithium-ion cells) differ primarily in whether they have a built-in Protection Circuit Module (PCM / PCB)

Protected Batteries
    • What they are: A bare lithium ion cell fitted with a small electronic circuit board (usually at the negative or positive end) and a connecting strip.

    • Key Protections:

      • Overcharging (stops charging if voltage gets too high)

      • Over-discharging (cuts off power if voltage drops too low)

      • Short-circuit / Over-current protection

      • Often includes a PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) for overheating and a CID (Current Interrupt Device) for pressure release.

    • Physical Size:Slower/longer. The protection circuit adds about 3–4 mm to the length (e.g., a standard 65 mm cell becomes ~68–69 mm).

    • Best For:

      • Single-cell consumer devices like flashlights, portable fans, and equipment that does not have a built-in Battery Management System (BMS).

      • Beginners or general users who want extra safety.

    • Drawbacks: Slightly more expensive, larger size may not fit tight battery compartments, and current output is often limited by the protection circuit.

Unprotected Batteries
    • What they are: A "bare" or naked lithium-ion cell with no internal electronic protection circuit attached.

    • Key Characteristics:

      • Relies entirely on the host device, charger, or external BMS (Battery Management System) to monitor voltage and current limits.

      • Delivers higher continuous and peak discharge current (CDR).

      • True standard sizing (e.g., exact 18 mm × 65 mm).

    • Physical Size:Standard / compact (shorter than protected cells).

    • Best For:

      • High-drain devices like power tools, vapes, or high-performance flashlights with built-in electronic protection.

      • Custom-built multi-cell battery packs managed by a dedicated external BMS.

      • Experienced users who understand battery safety and discharge ratings.

    • Drawbacks: Dangerous if over-discharged (<2.5V causing permanent damage/internal shorts) or short-circuited, carrying higher risks of thermal runaway if mishandled.
